Extract from iconomach poems (post 726)

The second Council of Nicaea restored the use of holy images, which had been suppressed by imperial edict inside the Byzantine Empire according to the argument developed in this poem:
O Logos, to fortify mortals’ piety
and elicit a clearer knowledge of You,
You ruled that the Cross alone would be represented
spurning the artificial matter
which painted you on walls of old:
thus you are shown victorious
