Emir Fakhr el-Din called together his brother Yunus, his mother, the SheikHistory of the
Centuries of the Chouf and the Khazen family and enjoined them to be united, to preserve their
country from the Turks and never to believe in their promises for fear of suffering the fate of
Jumblatt’s community. He rented two European galleons, filled them with presents and money
and took to the sea with God’s grace on the 10th day of Muharram heading for the country of the
Grand-Duke of Tuscany. He disembarked in Livorno where the Grand-Duke welcomed him.
