Religions and mystics

Introduction

In this piece of work we will try to tackle a subject which has not yet received the attention it deserves. It is about women's religion, or the mystical manifestation of religion for women in the history of the Muslim West, more precisely in Moroccan society in the Middle Ages.

To begin with, we will see how female religiosity is shown in different medieval sources from Morocco. The we will analyse how Sufism constitutes a framework for the emergence of female religiosity. As such, hagiographies are key to understanding female expressions of mysticism in spite of the fact that it turns out to be difficult to build a picture of their experiences.
