Sufism allowed women to overcome the sexual discrimination of the authorities and social and religious institutions and simply demonstrate their religiosity, sometimes seen as surpassing that of men in the depth of their faith and their goodness. However, their situation remained marginal because Sufism existed outside the official religious institutions and was often even criticised by Sunni experts (ulemas).
