Honouring the gods in the classical Mediterranean realm and on its fringes

Introduction

At the end of Prehistory, populations moved into the northern part of the African continent. The diversity of the groups accounts for the appearance of a range of major divinities. Later, Phoenician, Greek and Roman influences would cause the mutation of African gods and rites until the end of Antiquity. Recent studies conducted on the history of the region brought out the multiplicity of ancient gods honoured in the region that Greek authors called Libya along with the ongoing evolution of the cults and rites practiced by the local peoples.
