The second Council of Nicaea restored the use of holy images, which had been suppressed by imperial edict inside the Byzantine Empire according to the argument developed in this poem :
« O Logos, to fortify mortals' piety »
« and elicit a clearer knowledge of You, »
« You ruled that the Cross alone would be represented »
« spurning the artificial matter »
« which painted you on walls of old: »
« thus you are shown victorious »
