The Maronites according to William of Tyre's testimony

Their population was fairly important; It is said that it amounted to more than forty thousand people living in the bishoprics of Jbeil, Batrum and Tripoli in the thick of the mountains, on the outer flanks of Mount Lebanon. [...] A race of Syrians living in the province of Phenice, near Mount Lebanon and the town of Jbeil experienced a notable change in the state of its affairs. After sharing for close on fifty years the errors of one Maron, a heretic, after whom they had become known as Maronites [...] they sought out Aimery, Patriarch of Antioch, third Latin Patriarch, still the leader of that church; they forswore the error that had so long held them in peril of their souls and returned to Catholic unity
