Hugh of Fouilloy, The Cloister of the Soul (II, 4), ca. 1153
Stone is useful to build with, but what use its decoration? [....]. Genesis should be read in a book, not on a wall. On it, Eve is dressed, whilst a pauper lay stark naked against it. Adam has been given a fur-lined tunic whilst the brothers' community struggles under' the onslaught of winter. Let this be allowed (if allowed it must be) for those who dwell in the towns or villages that draw crowds so that the simplicity of the onlookers be charmed by painting who cannot be entranced by Scripture's wonders.
