Sciences and religions in the late modern period

Conclusion

Aeronautics illustrates both a stage in modern societies' secularisation and the way the adepts of different faiths endeavoured to adjust their practice to this new deal. The encounter between a novel technology and religious discourse did not in the end give rise to any deep symbolic confrontation. Building on what had already been done in the 19th century, the religious authorities grasped the advantages of integrating these new developments and their application within their supernatural understanding of the world. Accordingly they seized upon the general fascination for such innovations and put it to use to further their missionary ends. The new mode of transport was, with some liturgical adjustment, to afford all believers an un-hoped for access to shrines that stand at the fountainhead of their faith.
