The city of Tetouan

Tetouan remained in ruins then it was rebuilt by an Andalusian chief who came to Fez with the king of Granada. He was allowed to reinstate some authority in the city and to take it over. Thus he rebuilt all its walls. Thereafter he waged an endless war with the Portuguese. More than once he laid siege to Ceuta and Tangier. He was always leading an army of 300 horsemen, al from Granada's elite troop. He roamed the whole country with that army and caught quite a few Christians whom he kept as prisoners for the upkeep of the fortifications. Once, during one of my many visits to the city, I was given to see 3,.000 Christian prisoners, clad in woollen shirts. At night they slept tethered in underground cells.
