Sciences and religions in the late modern period

Conclusion

Al Muqtataf focussed on scientific and industrial questions surveying the progress made in these fields over three quarters of a century without facing serious competition or constraints. The steady course of its history was marked by three crowning points: the move to Egypt in 1888, the celebrations of its fiftieth anniversary in 1927 and the commemoration of that jubilee in 1952. The review was accessory to the democratisation of science as formulated in European languages, the theories of which it broadcasted as well as keeping abreast of its inventions. It has a unique place in the Nahda movement. Its importance was acknowledged on the occasion of official celebrations and beyond. For instance upon the hundredth anniversary of its foundation, Fuad Sarruf and his AUB colleagues in the Arab Studies Department furnished the serials with an index in three volumes. Entries are alphabetically listed under the author's name, title and subject of the articles, each followed by volume number, year and page. Tome III offers besides annexes regarding essentially the books published under the review's management. By now it has become a historiographical reference for whoever is interested in the role of the sciences in the Arab world today.
